The character of informel reveals itself quite differently in African sculpture than in Oceanic art. This sculpture – very rare – was made by an artist of the Temne at the end of the 19th, early 20th century.
He reduced the arms and the hands to a striking minimum with a simultaneous overemphasizing of the torso. A remarkable formal solution.
